oh boy I can relate!!! although I definitely like the self-checkout (some stores are better than others) I always go out of my way to say hi to the human who is there
I also use the self-checkout at some places where I am scanning my own items, and some grocery stores are moving to the majority being that. The thing about the pharmacy that is somewhat humorous is that it is a place where people who may be ill are using the screens with their hands and then the next person has to use it too. I bet they did not consider that in that specific place. But most of all for me, it is about the human connection and how much I have been surprised by and gained from others. We just have to sing our way through! Recently, a young woman told me she had just been at the register for a week so was learning. The thing was that she was a master at how she put things in bags and it was fun to notice and let her know.
Had the same reaction to the new CVS experience. But at our CVS it does seem to be speeding the process up. If it is all about transaction that’s okay. If about relationship and engagement not so much. BTW, happy birthday!
Yes, and it makes me even more determined to be non-techy when in person. Speaking of - on a bit different level - I was listening to an editor the other day and she was talking about AI, noting that it cannot replicate our imagination, intuition, common sense, emotion and sensations.
I work in daycare with 3 - 12 yr olds and I notice it more and more, the children seem less and less tuned into the human voice. I think they are spending more and more time with AI voices and that becomes what they key into …. Hope I’m wrong but … 🐝
How wonderful - such great ages! I worked with those ages for 35 years, many of them with 3-5 year olds before expanding into older children. I have watched the evolution of the technology and the relationship to it and it is a significant concern with all the ways it has morphed and captured minds. There is a national organization - MAMA - Mothers Against Media Addiction, somewhat following the MADD model. Of course, a main challenge is for the adults to reckon with their/our own attachment to phones, even if not diving in to AI and such. A huge topic and one that is, yes, altering connection and learning how to converse with each other.
I feel the same. All this technology designed to make our lives easier has in many cases made it more complicated and far less satisfying. I savor real connections and, more than ever., instigate them when I can.
Yes to instigating! That is the perfect word for making sure we continue a legacy, really, of being connectors and curious and acknowledging conversationalists, no matter how brief.

Agree about transaction vs relationship, for sure. Thank you for the birthday wishes - another trip around the sun, as some say, with trips adding up!
They most assuredly are!!
Done the math and you are right

Have not heard of MAMA.
I think it is the observation of every generation that the kids of today are not like we were back in our day 🐝
Yes, I think that is true too!
